Meditation process
4th April 2016
Before reading the 2nd chapter of Search Inside Yourself, I thought that meditation was about noticing sensations and maintaining a sense of peace, focusing on the breath.
One of the things that surprised me in this chapter was the broad range of scientific research on meditation.
I learnt that meditiating is linked to increased happiness, thicker neocortex and reduced anxiousness. Who wouldn't meditiate?
Learning concepts of mindfulness meditation was helpful. Attention will be an important concept to meditation as I move forward. Paying attention and refocusing that attention (when it wanders) is the scaffold of progressing with mindfulness meditation.
An almost humourous suggestion from the book is to sit like a mountain. Not just any mountain, a majestic, awe-inspiring mountain. Sitting upright like that helps with having a relaxed attention - a major lesson from chapter two.
